WSU Title Match: Mercedes Martinez v Rain 2009 saw Mercedes Martinez with one major problem in her career in WSU, namely the reigning champion Angel Orsini. Martinez was doing everything she could to wrest the title from Orsini and such was the strength of her challenge Orsini realized she needed some help. Enter Rain who in January 2009 didn’t just beat Rachel Summerlyn but interfered in the steel cage title match slamming the steel cage door in the face of the challenger and helping Orsini retain her title. The devious Rain though wasn’t just thinking of Orsini but herself as a future title shot was promised for the new hindrance in the life of Mercedes Martinez. Pacts tend to have short lives though and in March the chase was finally over as Martinez defeated Orsini with victory in a Bull rope match that saw guest referee Alicia bar Rain from ringside With Martinez now the champion where did that leave Rain? April saw the J-Cup tournament being held with the chance of a shot at the WSU title guaranteed for the winner and Orsini defeated Rain that put the former champion in a strong position to regain her title. Not only did she now have a rematch clause, she had the title shot earned from winning the J-Cup. It was time for Rain to call in her favours and she demanded Orsini give her one of those title shots setting up a triple threat match between Martinez, Orsini and Rain at the King and Queen of the Ring tournament show the following day. The challengers worked together to try and win the belt but eventually Martinez retained her belt when she pinned Rain, that was the last title match she’s received before this weekend (mainly her fault though as will be explained). Martinez continued her domination of Orsini beating her in that legendary Iron Woman match in June that meant the former champion could no longer challenge for the WSU title while Martinez held the belt. With Orsini in limbo the tables were turned and Rain asked Orsini to help her win the belt and then she’d give her the first title shot. Desperate to regain her title Orsini agreed. As the summer progressed Martinez continued to see off every challenger thrown at her and not just in the US but in Australia too. Orsini continued to be under the spell of Rain but in August that all came to a sorry end. Rain and Orsini chased the tag titles held by Alicia and Brooke Carter (now Brittany Savage) but when a title shot ended in failure after a DQ due to use of a steel chair Rain finally lost patience with her partner but Orsini refused to fight back just yet.
August saw Rain and Orsini take on Martinez and Nikki Roxx with Rain finally getting a pinfall on the WSU Champion after her partner had accidentally hit her. After the match Roxx attacked Martinez and it became clear that she was the latest wrestler in WSU to take money from Rain in her ongoing campaign to win the WSU title. Rain wanted Orsini to continue the attack on the champion but enough was enough and she refused to attack the woman who at one time was her best friend. Instead she hit Rain with the chair and then cleared house. The balance of power in WSU had changed, Orsini was now at the side of the champion she couldn’t challenge and vowed to help her see off the alliance of Rain and Roxx. A feud between Rain and Orsini followed with Rain getting the win in October and yet more followers were recruited later that evening as Rain hired Havok and Hatred to attack Martinez and Portia Perez after their main event title match. ‘Raining Misery’ saw Rain rise to the top of the rankings when she became number one challenger to Martinez after defeating Portia Perez. She also interfered in the tag title match helping her allies Havok and Hatred beat Martinez and Orsini. Rain savagely attacked the champion after the match with a number of chair shots. The new number one challenger grabbed the title belt to emphasise it would only be a matter of time before it was rightly hers. Doctors recommended that the champion take time off from wrestling for the next six months but she bravely decided against such a dramatic decision.
Rain finally had her title shot set for December but due to her commitments with AAA in Mexico she was unable to take up that chance. Instead she hired yet another wrestler to continue her campaign against Martinez. Awesome Kong was recruited to face Martinez but she came up short in her title challenge.
So now we come to the Third Anniversary Show and finally Rain will get in the ring one-on-one with Mercedes Martinez. It promises to be yet another WSU classic and who knows what will happen. After finally getting this chance will Rain hire yet more members of the WSU roster to help her get the belt? Or will Angel Orsini do everything she can to help her friend keep the title? All will be revealed this weekend but the fact this is an Uncensored Rules match could make this a very difficult night for the champion. Spirit Title: Alicia vs Brittney Savage Looking back at the history of WSU Alicia plays a vitally important role as a former champion who reigned supreme until her retirement. 2009 saw her make her return to the company and in June she replaced Miss April (who’d joined WWE) and became the new partner of tag champion Brooke Carter. At ‘Uncensored Rumble’ the new team saw off the challenge of Jessicka Havok and Hailey Hatred. The pair kept hold of the tag belts until August but it was clear to everyone that Carter was very much the junior partner and the weak link in the team. They finally lost their belts to Havok and Hatred but were granted a rematch in October. Again they lost with Carter being pinned but that proved to be the end of their tag partnership. Unknown to Alicia, Carter had become allied with the newest manager in WSU Rick Cataldo. After the title match defeat Carter and Cataldo attacked Alicia but that wasn’t the biggest shock of the night for fans who liked Carter. She told fans that she was sick of being so happy all the time and that wasn’t the real her. In fact her real name was Brittney Savage and now she was showing fans her real personality. Savage won the WSU Spirit title defeating Jana but at the final show of 2009 Alicia defeated her to become the first ever woman in WSU to win the WSU title, the tag belts and the Spirit title. Now Alicia defends her belt against Savage in a match that will see her win five minutes alone in the ring with Rick Cataldo if she keeps her title. Will Savage regain her belt or will Cataldo have another painful evening in WSU? Angel Orsini v Nikki Roxx If there’s one woman in WSU whose attitude has definitely changed for the better over the last year then it’s Angel Orsini. After finally freeing herself from the hold that Rain had over her and allying herself with Mercedes Martinez, with whom she now holds the WSU Tag Team titles, she soon found a new rival determined to make her life hell. Nikki Roxx returned to WSU last year and soon became the latest wrestler to join forces with Rain but Orsini couldn’t look on at Roxx attacking Martinez and do nothing about it helping to save Martinez from their attack. At the final show of the year Orsini again helped Martinez as she was attacked by Roxx and the undefeated Amber O’Neal. Later that day Roxx attacked Orsini causing her to lose her match against Jazz. Orsini knows she can’t get a title shot while Martinez is champion but that could easily change this weekend if Rain were to finally win the belt. So she knows she can’t afford to have many more losses on her record if she wants a chance to regain her belt. A win over Nikki Roxx will go some way to helping Orsini climb back up the rankings but she knows her opponent will be one of the toughest challenges she can face. Jana v Latasha (Submission Match) The feud between Jana and Latasha has been one of the most intense and at times cruelest ever seen in WSU. The former Soul Sisters saw their relationship fall apart in early 2009 after a series of losses. Finally Jana attacked Latasha including kicking her in the stomach even when it was believed she was pregnant. When both were included in the tournament to crown the first ever Spirit Champion it was obvious there was going to be trouble aplenty.
Latasha became the first ever Spirit Champion it was clear that Jana would be determined to take the belt from her. After beating Jennifer Cruz in her first round match Jana went on to attack Latasha with a pool cue after she’d defeated Lea Morrison. The final was a four-way match and it was Latasha who pinned Jana to win the belt but the pair clashed again after the match setting up a title match in August. Latasha retained her belt but later on the tapings she was attacked backstage by Jana after another successful defence against Amber. Latasha eventually lost her title to Jana in an Empty Arena match on October 10th but the same day Jana lost the belt to Brittney Savate. But the problems with Jana continued right until the end of the year. At the final WSU show of 2009 Jana again attacked Latasha. Now the feud is about to reach its crescendo as they meet in a submission match at the Anniversary Show This encounter won’t be for the faint hearted that’s for sure. Amber O'Neal v Jazz Neither Amber O’Neal or former WWE Women’s Champion Jazz have lost in WSU, one of those perfect records is destined to fall by the wayside this weekend when the pair meet one-on-one. O’Neal made her WSU debut in August defeating Annie Social and Cindy Rogers. Wins over WSU Hall of Famer Malia Hosaka and then Sassy Stephanie helped O’Neal prove she was a force to reckon with in WSU. In December O’Neal made it 5-0 with victory over Sumie Sakai. O’Neal also allied herself with Rain so she has friends in high places that’s for sure. Jazz also has also defeated some big names in WSU including former champion Angel Orsini last December. By the time she steps in the ring this Saturday Jazz will be a member of the WSU Hall of Fame. O’Neal has already beaten one member of the Hall of Fame, will Jazz become the second to lose to her or will Jazz cement her position in WSU as one of its best wrestlers? April Hunter has many strings to her bow. Pro wrestler, manager, body builder, model and burlesque dancer. This weekend she makes her debut in WSU taking on the just released TNA Knockout Traci Brooks. Hunter, who also recently appeared in TNA, won’t want to lose on her WSU debut that’s for sure. Also due to appear on a stacked card are the Alere Little Feather who makes her return from a long injury lay-off and Amy Lee who returns to WSU after a period of suspension to take on former tag champion Jessicka Havok. A new tag team debuts in the shape of Marti Bell and Tina San Antonio who face The Boston Shore (Lexxus and Amber). We'll have news from the show and the Hall of Fame Ceremony that sees Molly Holly (who we understand is due to have a busy day), Dawn Marie and Jazz in next weeks massive Fighting Females magazine.
